Video Compression Tips for Web and Social Media

Learn the best video formats, resolution settings, and bitrate recommendations for fast-loading web video.

Video dominates the web, accounting for over 80% of all internet traffic. But large video files frustrate viewers, drain bandwidth, and hurt page performance. Compressing your videos correctly balances file size and visual quality so your content loads fast and looks great.

Choosing the Right Video Format

Not all video formats are created equal. Here is how the major options compare:

  • MP4 (H.264): The universal standard. Supported by every browser, device, and platform. Use this when broad compatibility matters most. H.264 offers good compression with wide support.
  • WebM (VP9): Google's open, royalty-free format. It delivers 30-50% better compression than H.264 at the same quality. Best for web-only distribution where you control the playback environment.
  • MP4 (H.265/HEVC): The successor to H.264, offering roughly 50% better compression. However, browser support is still limited, making it best for download-and-play scenarios.

For maximum compatibility, output H.264 MP4 at 8-10 Mbps for 1080p content.

Resolution and Frame Rate

Higher resolution always looks sharper, but it comes at a steep file size cost. Consider these guidelines:

  • 4K (3840x2160): Only for content where detail matters (product demos, cinematic footage). Requires at least 25-35 Mbps for acceptable quality.
  • 1080p (1920x1080): The sweet spot for most web video. 8-15 Mbps produces excellent results.
  • 720p (1280x720): Ideal for social media clips, embedded tutorials, or bandwidth-constrained audiences. 5-8 Mbps is plenty.
  • 480p (854x480): Use for mobile-first content or slow connections. 2-4 Mbps keeps files small.

For frame rate, 30 fps is standard for most content. Only use 60 fps if your video contains fast motion (sports, gameplay). Halving the frame rate from 60 to 30 can cut file size by nearly 50%.

Bitrate Recommendations

Bitrate is the single biggest factor in video file size. Here are recommended starting points for web video by resolution and frame rate:

These are starting points. For simple content (talking heads, screencasts), you can often go 30-40% lower without visible quality loss.
